Everyone spoils their pets at Christmas; make sure if you are buying a new toy for your fancy feline or precious pooch that it is durable enough to not break into 100 pieces for your pet to choke on. Plush Toys with eyes or beads that can be torn or fall off can be dangerous.
Keep your pet cool. This goes without saying but never leave your pet in the car alone. Temperatures can spike and kill pets in minutes.
Also dogs who travel in the back of utes are exposed to scorching metal that heats up and the longer it is exposed to the sun’s rays, the more likely your dog will get burned paws.
When at home always make sure there is enough drinking water for your animal and that there is a place for them to get away from the heat. A good trick is to half freeze a couple of water bowls for the backyard and keep them in the shade. Top them off with cool water to keep them refreshed and hydrated all day.
Get your pet desexed! Especially if you have a cat that roams as the warmer months is when cats breed. Our AWL Community Vet Clinic offers cheap desexing and all money raised helps the shelter animals find a home.
There are many benefits to Desexing your cat including cheaper registration, reduction of territorial behaviour such as spraying indoors and fighting and cats can also become more affectionate. To desex your pet call our Community Vet Clinic on 0755940111.
Don’t feed your pet your food. It is hard to say no to those big brown eyes under the table at Christmas but feeding them your food can make them sick. Foods like onion, chocolate and sugary sweets can harm your pet. Cooked bones are also brittle and prove a choking hazard.
Heading to the beach, park or outside in general with your pet these holidays? Then be tick and flea ready. While there are Tick and flea collars available on the market it is so important to continue to check your pet for ticks as collars are not 100% tick proof. If you think your pet has a Tick please call our Community Vet Clinic on 0755940111.
Keep Christmas decorations out of reach. While we all love a dog wearing a Santa hat, a dog running through the house with tinsel and baubles in tow however may not be so funny. Decorations can be a choking hazard to your pet so keep an eye on those lower hanging ornaments.
Treat your dog to some exercise or playtime. Early in the morning or late in the evening is the best time to bond and play with your pet away from the summer sun.
Keep your pets away from fireworks. While some pets aren’t bothered by fireworks, many are and it’s ideal to keep your pet calm by playing with them while fireworks are going on. Don’t smother them with affection and make them think it’s okay to be afraid of a normal sound or they’ll do it every time.
