Scenic Rim Regional Council has reached a milestone with Council’s first female apprentice commencing last week.
One of two new apprentices, 16-year-old Emma Rodgers commenced her diesel fitter apprenticeship alongside apprentice boiler maker Matthew Heit, 17, a third generation Council employee.
Scenic Rim Regional Council CEO, Craig Barke said Council was committed to providing employment opportunities for youth in the Scenic Rim region.
“An apprenticeship with Council will serve as a great foundation to Emma and Matthew’s careers and I am pleased to welcome them on board,” Mr Barke said.
“The appointment of our first female apprentice is a very proud moment for Council, our region and the employment of females in male dominated industries.
“I wish Emma and Matthew all the best with their apprenticeships and am sure they will find their time with Council a rewarding experience.”
Emma has enjoyed playing with machinery since she was old enough to hold a spanner and was inspired to make a career out of it by her father and uncle.
“I want to follow in my father and uncle footsteps who are both mechanics and by completing this apprenticeship I will make them both very proud of my achievements,” Ms Rodgers said.
“Working for Scenic Rim Regional Council will be such a great experience as it is a friendly environment and I feel like part of the team. I am looking forward to the opportunities that will come my way.”
Scenic Rim Councillor and President of the Australian Local Government Women’s Association (ALGWA) Queensland Branch, Kathy Bensted said Council was leading by example by employing a female in male dominated industries.
“Council’s recent show of support for women in male dominated fields is a prime example of Council’s commitment to modern and exemplary human resources and equal opportunity practices,” Cr Bensted said.
Over the course of their four year apprenticeships, Emma and Matthew will complete certificates in their chosen courses and attend TAFE to study modules including workplace health and safety and teamwork.
