Deputy Mayor of Scenic Rim Regional Council, Cr Dave Cockburn reminded people that it’s important to ensure public safety is not compromised when promoting or advertising by posting signs.
“We value the views of residents across the region, and certainly encourage the promotion of events in the region, however, it is important to remember public safety and lawful behaviour when posting signs,” said Cr Cockburn.
“This reminder goes to everyone, including residents, businesses, election candidates, interest groups and individuals.”
Council has regulatory requirements that apply to the erection of advertising, this includes Local laws, Planning schemes, the Sustainable Planning Act 2009 and the Building Act 1975.
Most typical signage is regulated under Subordinate Local Law No. 1.4 (Installation of Advertising Devices) 2011; however for larger signage (including billboards) the Sustainable Planning Act 2009 and Building Act 1975 may also impose approval requirements.
“These regulatory requirements ensure that signage is placed responsibly and does not impact the health and safety of the public, it is also important that we protect the environment and the scenic amenity of our region.
“When erecting signs on public land or along roadways remember that a local law approval is required,” Cr Cockburn concluded.
Council officers assess applications against criteria specified by local laws to ensure that signage will not cause a public health and safety risk.
Enquiries regarding local law signage requirements should be directed to Council’s Health and Environment team on 07 5540 5444.
