Recycling organic waste will be on the agenda at schools throughout the Scenic Rim as Council delivers around 40 compost bins this week.
The free compost bins worth $50 each are being delivered in an effort to promote recycling organic waste as part of National Recycling Week.
Mayor John Brent said it was great to involve schools in programs that raise the awareness and importance of recycling.
“By giving students the opportunity to recycle at school, hopefully they can take their knowledge and experiences to introduce or expand recycling at home,” Cr Brent said.
“I encourage the schools to put the compost bins to good use and integrate them into the teaching curriculum.
“There are many environmental benefits from recycling organic waste including improving soil, attracting worms and reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill.”
Students have the chance to win a compost bin for their home by entering Council’s National Recycling Week competition. The three age categories are:
- Kindergarten/Prep and Year 1
- Years 2, 3 and 4
- Years 5, 6 and 7
Include your name, contact phone number and address when sending in your entry to:

Entries close Monday 14 November 2011. The compost bins will start to be delivered from 14 November and will include a “How to Compost” booklet.
