With National Recycling Week just around the corner, Council has analysed how much the region recycles and what we can do better.

In 2010/11, we all recycled:
- 7,805 litres of oil
- 5,158 tonnes of green waste
- 1,966 tyres
- 2,755 tonnes of household recycling
- 1,167 tonnes scrap metal
- 223 tonnes glass
- 230 tonnes cardboard
Mayor John Brent said this was a significant effort but there was still more we could do to help the environment.

“We can all reduce the amount of waste going to landfill by composting our organic waste and placing all recyclable materials in your yellow top bin,” Cr Brent said.
“About 50% of contents in the average household waste bin are organic waste which can be composted and 20% is recyclable; so there is definitely room for improvement.
“Our region is known for its beautiful scenery and striking landscapes and it’s important we do what we can to sustain this for the future; recycling is just one of the things we can do now.”
Some handy recycling tips:
- Do not bag your recyclables, place recyclables loose within your recycle bin
- Lids can be recycled but must be removed from recyclable items
- Cardboard, including pizza boxes, can be recycled
