Based on the original book by Gold Coast writer Tim Baker with breathtaking imagery by world renown surf photographer Ted Grambeau, The Surfer and The Mermaid depicts a surreal underwater world where a young surfer is led by a mermaid into the depths to meet her marine friends, the whales.

Utilising the amazing creative talents of local theatre makers, this work is jointly presented by Bleach* Festival and The Arts Centre Gold Coast.
Director Melinda Collie-Homes, and composer Nadia Sunde have joined the creative team to bring this piece of work to the stage.
Melinda is a Tamborine local, and has brought an enormous amount of experience to the project.

Local actor Luke Townson plays the role of the surfer, who reveals to his audience the extraordinary tale of the chance meeting with the mermaid.
This piece of entertainment is engaging, and a must for the whole family. Children aged 5 – 10 years will especially be endeared to the work.
Creative Producer Brad Rush had this to say;
"We are so proud to be able to produce local works, using our local talents. This is a really lovely piece of children’s theatre that is relevant to the coast, not only because of the subject, but also because of the collaboration with local professionals."
Following premiere performances at the Bleach* Festival, The Surfer and The Mermaid will run a season on Tamborine Mountain and finally showcase in The Space at The Arts Centre Gold Coast.
It will then be pitched for performances at national festivals and for regional touring opportunities.
