The Arts Centre Gold Coast is currently celebrating its 25th birthday with a yearlong celebration featuring 25 events, activities and exhibitions.
The Sons of Beaches ’72 exhibition is the third feature event on the calendar and will run in Gallery 2 from Saturday 4 February until Sunday 18 March.
The Arts Centre Gold Coast Marketing Manager Sue-Anne Chapman is looking forward to the opening of this exhibition.
‘We are delighted to feature this exhibition as our next 25th birthday feature event. The Gold Coast is the perfect location for an exhibition such as this and we look forward to welcoming Gold Coast locals and visitors to the centre to enjoy this showcase of Australian surfing history’, she said.
The Sons of Beaches ’72 exhibition coincides with the 2012 Quicksilver Pro and the inaugural Bleach Festival of Surf Culture. The exhibitions features a surf documentary and installation that examines the development of surfing in the 1970s and the somewhat subversive culture which surrounds the period, as well as a look at this significant time in Australia’s living memory.
Produced by Glenn Blight and Geoff Charters, the film features original footage from a 16mm surf film by Steve Core which was shown at the 1972 World Titles.
There are a number of public events taking place while the exhibition is showing including a red carpet event on Tuesday 21 February from 6.00pm – 8.00pm and the Sundays on the Couch sessions running from 12 February through to 4 March where visitors can hear surfing industry professionals talk about their personal experience from the 1972 world titles.
