Opera for Over 50’s

After the success of last year’s program and the overwhelming response from the community and participants alike, The Arts Centre Gold Coast, in conjunction with Opera Queensland is proud to present the popular Opera for Over 50’s program, from Tuesday 14 to Saturday 18 February 2012.

In 2011, The Arts Centre opened its doors to 40 young at heart Over 50’s, who sang, moved and performed popular operatic and musical theatre repertoire under the mastery of directors, pianists and vocalists from Opera Queensland.

Modelled on Opera Queensland’s ‘Moving Opera’ concept, which is usually conducted for high school students, Opera for Over 50’s was created to offer our Gold Coast seniors the same amazing experience.

The program has proven to be so successful that it will now be delivered to numerous locations across Queensland.

The Arts Centre Gold Coast’s Creative Producer, Brad Rush commented:
"We believe we’ve captured something that is sadly missing here on the Coast - a lack of learning opportunities in performing arts for our valued seniors. There are many wonderful events for this demographic, but insufficient workshop opportunities for the young at heart to be actively involved!  This program allows our seniors to bury themselves for a week in this immersive activity, and it’s great fun."

The workshop culminates in a special showcase event in The Arts Centre’s Arts Theatre on Saturday 18 February. Participants will be given the opportunity to perform snippets of what they have learnt during the workshop, alongside their peers and with Opera Queensland’s vocalists and facilitators.
