On the 4 March 2012 an event will take place that incorporates Womens International Day with a fundraiser for The Nuhovic family as well as a special presentation to Judy Spence.
The Story on Dzenan Nuhovic
The Nuhovic family were refugees from Bosnia. The father was in a concentration camp and the mother and children fled to Norway.
The Nuhovic family were refugees from Bosnia. . The father finally escaped and joined them in Norway and after six years in Norway they were granted refugee status to come to Australia.
The family were happy to have a chance to start a new life in "The Lucky Country". The boys delivered pizzas and saved their money. They enrolled in an IT course at university. The family opened a take a way shop at Sunnybank Hills from their savings - they only rented their house and the shop premises.
Dzenan was on the way to do the banking in his little Mazda when a Mac Truck collided with his car at Sunnybank Hills.
Dzenan suffered severe head injuries and was in a coma at the Royal Brisbane Hospital for two years. His parents were told to put him in a home and get on with their life.
They brought him home and have looked after him since the release from hospital. He was only twenty-three when the accident happened.
For eleven years he has been trapped in his body. He can only use two eyes, (one has a dropped eyelid) and two ears. He can swallow thickened fluids but has to have liquids on the hour from a bag on his side. He also suffers seizures.
He was deemed to be at fault in the accident and received no compensation from insurance. The parents and Disability services help support him.
The parents are devoted to his care. He is totally dependent on them for existence. The eye gaze machine will give him some form of communication. He focuses with the pupils of his eye on words to make sentences. He has been assessed as able to respond to the technology. He will need the help of a speech pathologist to train him to use the device.
The organisers and festival director Janeth Deen is asking for everyone to come and join them for High Tea and support this worthy cause on the 4 March between 2.00pm and 5.00pm.
This is a fundraiser for Dzenan Nuhovic and all funds will go to his trust fund in order to help his family gain more help.
